Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak

Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak rose from under the sea in a volcanic eruption over 100,000 years ago. Located on the eastern end of Jeju Island, there is a huge crater at the top of Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak. The crater is about 600m in diameter and 90m high. With the 99 sharp rocks surrounding the crater, it looks like a gigantic crown. While the southeast and north sides are cliffs, the northwest side is a verdant grassy hill that is connected to the Seongsan Village. The ridge provides an ideal spot for walks and for horse riding as well.

The sunrise from the crater is magnificent. Also the Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak surrounded by bright yellow colored rapeseed flowers in the spring is truly a sight to behold.

The famous activity that takes place everyday at Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak is watching the sunrise from the crater. This activity has become famous as Seongsan Sunrise Festival since 1994. It attracts lots of tourists for three days starting from December 31 tol January 2, every year. During this festival, as time moves towards the midnight on December 31, people surround the performance stage, set up at Seongsan Sunrise Peak. For celebrating the New Year, a torchlight show, a campfire and fireworks are set. Another important aspect of this festival is a traditional ritual called gut. As soon as the sun of the New Year rises, a golden tape is cut. The visitors are also entertained with various types of performances held on the performance stage. Other events that are held here include a mounted police parade, a mandarin orange eating contest and a ‘pungmul’ performance.

Haeundae Beach, Busan

sm

Haeundae Beach is probably the most famous beach in the country. "Haeundae" was so named by scholar Choi Chi-Won (857~?) of the Silla Dynasty (BC 57~AD 935). When he was walking past Dongbaekdo Island, he was fascinated by it and left the carved words "Hae Un Dae" on a stone wall on the island. Haeundae is 1.5 km long, 30~50m wide, and spans an area of 58,400㎡. The white sand is rough and sticks easily to your skin. The sand of this beach is composed of sand that comes from Chuncheon Stream and shells that have been naturally eroded by the wind over time.

Haeundae Beach is also famous for the various cultural events and festivals held throughout the year. At Haeundae Beach there is a Folk Square where you can enjoy traditional games such as neoldduigi (seesaw jumping), Korean wrestling, tuho(arrow throwing), tug-of-war and yutnori. Within these alleys are galleries, traditional restaurants, traditional teahouses, and cafes. The shops in Insa-dong are very popular among all age groups, because each one is unique. The galleries are the heartbeat of Insa-dong. There are about 100 galleries in the area and you can see every example of traditional Korean fine art from paintings to sculptures. The most famous galleries are Hakgojae Gallery, which functions as the center of folk art, Gana Art Gallery, which promotes many promising artists, and Gana Art Center. The best way to visit these galleries is to use the “Art Center Bus.” It will take you to over 10 of the most famous galleries at a very reasonable price.

The teahouses and restaurants are the perfect compliment to the galleries. At first they might be hard to find, but if you take the time to stroll around the twisting alleyways, the window shopping in itself can be very entertaining. If you had to choose just one teahouse from the hundreds that are here, Gwicheon would be the place to go.

Poet Cheon Sang-Byeong’s wife is the proprietor of the tea house. The shop isn’t very big, but you can see pictures and books of famous poets. You might even run into one. Mokwacha is their best tea and it is famous for its fragrance.

Every Sunday from 10:00 – 22:00, some streets are blocked off from traffic and it becomes a place of cultural space. This is when the stores will set up booths outside. Not only the stores that are here, but all kinds of people arrive during this time and set up shop, such as Korean candy merchants and old fortune tellers. There are traditional performances and exhibits as well. Insa-dong is especially popular with foreign tourists.
